Thermophily is a unique ensemble consisting of three middle and low brass players and a composer-in-residence. Formed in 2016 by three long-time NYC friends and professional freelance musicians, Thermophily is dedicated to contemporary brass chamber music and exploring new musical combinations and sounds for horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and bass trombone. 

The name Thermophily comes from the Greek word “thermophile,” referring to organisms that thrive at higher than normal temperatures. The group’s performers draw on their various backgrounds in classical, jazz, popular, and new music to thrive and build on a collaborative creative process in their pieces and performances. Thermophily consists of Gregory Erickson (trombone, bass trombone, and euphonium), Tim McCarthy (horn), Scott Thornton (bass trombone and tuba), and James D. Thornton (composer).
