Gregory Erickson is a musician, scholar, and educator whose career has centered on cultivating interdisciplinary dialogue by bringing together ideas, methods, and practices from diverse fields. His work creates spaces in which distinct disciplinary perspectives interact, challenge one another, and generate new forms of artistic and intellectual inquiry. As a trombonist, he is a founding member of the Thermophily Trio, Tromboline, and Subduction Zone. Each of these groups premieres new music in both traditional and idiosyncratic spaces, and with these ensembles he performs regularly in New York City and Paris, as well as other sites in the US and France. He is the author of five books and numerous essays. His writing has been praised for bringing together the autobiographical, the popular, and the scholarly in an accessible yet intellectual style. As an award-winning professor at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, he extends this interdisciplinary ethos to his teaching by reimagining the classroom as a collaborative space for inquiry and creative practice.
